Yea, I’m doing a Wednesday meme on Thursday. June has been a busy month since my grandparents are in town and family members have been dropping by to visit so there’s hardly a quiet moment because my family LOUD. I haven’t even written up all the reviews I had planned for the Write Those Reviews Party. I only managed to complete one. 😦 But anyways, this meme.
Top 5 Wednesday is a weekly meme created by GingerReadsLainey. For more information on this meme, visit the Goodreads group. This week’s topic:
Characters You Wish You Could Drown
There are a few characters in books and movies that I wish I could kick in the arse but these are the ones that readily come to mind. They’re listed in the order that they pop in my thoughts.
Clary from Cassandra Clare’s City of Bones
Actually, all the characters in City of Bones pissed me off but Clary more so because she seems very dull. She does the stupidest things and is highly annoying. And she seems to have very low self-esteem. She constantly compares herself to the other females she comes in contact with, which I was fine with at the beginning of the book, but I’d hoped that by the end she would change but she remained the same instead. Tut! I would dunk her in some water until she gets some sense.
Tris from Veronica Roth’s Insurgent
Obviously Tris popped into my head because I recently read Insurgent. I’m no longer steaming over this inadequate follow up to Divergent but I’m still disgruntled about the story and the character’s progress. Tris does some stupid stuff in this book and, to me, she’s no longer the strong individual she was in Divergent. I really wanted to continue liking her but I simply couldn’t. Yes, I’d dunk her until she gets some sense too.
Ember from Julie Kagawa’s Talon
Another recent read. Ember is a spoiled brat and annoying as hell. I get that she wants to be free to choose her own way and all that jazz—if I were in her situation, I’d feel the same too—but she obviously doesn’t think too far ahead. Actually, upon completing that last sentence I realized that I also find Riley/Cobalt highly annoying as well. These characters seem not to have a higher motive for the actions other than simply to be free. They don’t think things through. I’d dunk them both and I really think I could too. They’re portrayed as intimidating dragons but they come off as weak to me. A review is coming soon.
Nynaeve from Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series, mostly in the fifth novel, The Fires of Heaven
Nynaeve annoys the crap outta me. I kinda like her sometimes and I admire her at other times but a good 88-90% of the time she annoys me. She thinks she’s always right, but she’s not. She thinks she’s the most mature, but she’s not. She thinks she’s the best at being in charge, but she’s not. She needs to take a backseat sometimes and stop tugging her damn hair all the damn time. Maybe she just needs to get laid to quell all that anger. Douse that raging anger with some sweet lovemaking with a Shienaran warrior. (Haha! Giving myself jokes.) I doubt that I can dunk her though. Nynaeve may be annoying but she is strong and can hold her own. I respect her for that and a lot more.
Percy Jackson from Rick Riordan’s Heroes of Olympus series, mostly in the fourth book, The House of Hades
I loved him in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series but in this Heroes of Olympus series he’s a bit annoying. His heroics got on my damn nerves. He’s just too damn good. I couldn’t take him seriously and he comes off as a bit gossipy in the House of Hades. I didn’t like that (I discuss why in my review). Everything’s about saving people and loving Annabeth and I understand that he’s selfless and considerate and all but shit! It’s overkill sometimes. I’d try to dunk him but it wouldn’t work. Or maybe he would trick me and make me think that I succeeded but the whole time he would be chilling under the water, watching the pretty fish swim by.
A honorable mention goes to Jason from the same series simply because in every damn book he manages to get himself knocked the fuck out. Seriously dude, what the hell?! I was glad that he was conscious for most of the last book but still he suffered from something and was hindered for a while. I think Jason is a wuss (sorry, if you like him) so he would be totally dunked.
Well, that’s it. Are there any characters that annoyed you so much you would dunk or drown them? Share below.
Happy reading!
Hmm, I didn’t notice that about Clary comparing herself to other females – to one female yes, but I didn’t notice anything other than that, but maybe that’s because I’ve come across characters that are 10x worse than her with that trait. It’s one that always infuriated me too and is way too common! DOWN WITH THE PASSIVE AGGRESSIVE OTHER WOMEN HATING.
Totally with you on Tris.
Also interesting that 4 out of 5 are females (I think if I did a list it would be the same sort of ratio). I think sometimes we’re harsher on our own gender because we have this feeling that they’re letting the gender down in general. 😛

It is too common. I noticed it first when she described her mom. My memory is foggy but I think that occurs early in the story. And again when Isabelle lent her some clothes. Another instance of it probably popped up close to the end otherwise it wouldn’t have stuck out in my memory.
Ah! I didn’t realize that. I do agree with you that we’re sometimes harsher on our own gender. I especially see that since my family is around because more is expected of the girls, and sometimes I judge female characters a little hard, especially if she’s very weepy.

If I was going to dunk someone from HOO I would go with Piper, that girl is fricking annoying. I seriously wanted to scream at her every time she mentioned the damn scar on Jason’s lip! Jason could definitely use a dunking too though!

Yes, Piper! It’s weird that she didn’t pop in mind as I wrote this post since she annoyed me more than Jason. I was glad that she stopped obsessing over him and started to kick some butt in the last book.

Yeah, she always annoyed me more than Jason as well. I was glad too, but I wished he hadn’t made her look better at the expense of Annabeth.

Totally agree. But since Annabeth wasn’t up to her usual standard, I wish he had given more details about how she and Percy are emotionally after the trek through Hades.

Yeah me too, I said that in my review of the book I think.
