Bout of Books 14: Update 3

Day 3 of the Bout of Books 14 read-a-thon is done and I finally understand the name of the event. Haha, yea, I’m slow. I was saying to myself that “Bout of Books” is an odd name. What do they mean by bout and why does the girl in the picture have a pencil in her mouth and a beret-like cap on her head. Is she an artist? It makes no sense. But then it clicked.

The girl has an ice pack on her head and is checking her temperature, and bout refers to her being ill. Haha, I laughed, embarrassed. I’m so slow.

Wednesday, Day 3 progress

Books read

Jason and the Argonauts by Apollonius of Rhodes

Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

Books completed

Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo

Quick synopsis

It’s a young-adult fantasy novel about a poor, orphan girl who learns she’s special. When her power is discovered, Alina is taken from her best friend, Mal, and whisked off to court, where she trains as a Grisha, member of a group of magical people led by the Darkling. Part of her country is marred by a queer darkness that many believe her power can help eradicate. She later learns that her powers are intended for evil and must escape the clutches of those who want to manipulate her.

Quick thoughts

The story started out strong but as I read, I found issue with the protagonist and the world building. As just about everyone has said, the Darkling is interesting and I find him to be a more complex character than Alina.

Where did I read?

On the bus

On the train

On a bench in a garden

For a list of books I plan to read, see my first post.
