Exploring My Bookshelves: Fan Fiction

Exploring My Bookshelves is a weekly meme created by Victoria at Addlepates and Book Nerds and co-hosted with Shannon at For the Love of Words. Visit either blog for the list of topics.

This week’s topic:

A book you wrote/want to write fan fiction about

Song of the Lioness books
I prefer the old covers above to these.

Tamora Pierce’s Song of the Lioness quartet is one of my favorite series. I’ve read the books numerous times. When I was a teen, I considered writing a story based on Alanna to really flesh her out. Back then (and now too), I thought the story was very simple and I thought I could write my own contribution to the series where I would introduce some complexity. I didn’t know how I would go about that but it was something I often thought of back then. I didn’t realize that there was a name for such writings. Actually, I didn’t know what fan fiction was until a year or so ago. It wasn’t mentioned in any of my English and literature classes, not even the creative writing one.

Cinderella
I wonder what I did with this book.

As for a book I did write fan-fiction on, that would be Cinderella. It’s my favorite fairytale and all through childhood I would write little stories based on it except the protagonist was me and the plot was greatly influenced by my life so the story was set in Jamaica and there weren’t any balls.

I wish I knew where my copy of Golden Books Cinderella went. I have Sleeping Beauty, which looks okay considering that I’ve had it for 20+ years. I guess my Cinderella copy was too abused to last and got lost in all the moves.

Have you written fan-fiction or considered doing so? Let me know below.
How this meme works:
  1. Take a “shelfie” (a picture of your bookshelf). Preferably literal, but e-shelves work too.
  2. Write something on the day’s prompt.
  3. Give the blurb and the cover of the book (and what you thought of it if you’ve read it).
  4. Link back to Victoria’s post.
