Book Haul #45 (cont’d): Borrowed Things

…and free things as well.

The first part of this book haul got a bit long because of how chatty I am, so I had to break it up in two. This part will feature all the stuff I borrowed from the library and things I got on Free Comic Book Day, which was a success for me this year because I made the effort to get up early and go to the store to get the selections I want.

**Note: Titles below are linked to Goodreads. But if I’ve read and posted a review of a book, I’ll link to my review.

Borrowed

Physical books

First of all, I got myself a Stranger Things Funko Pop. 😀 That’s Dustin, who’s my favorite character in the show.

City of Saints and Thieves by Natalie C. Anderson

I picked up this for a buddy-read I’m doing with Rachel from Life of a Female Bibliophile. I’ve never heard of it before, but so far I like it. It took forever for me to find a copy of this at a library.

The Bedlam Stacks by Natasha Pulley

The striking cover of this book caught my eye when I was at the library for City of Saints and Thieves and immediately I thought of Milliebot Reads’s review. I was granted an e-ARC of the book prior to its publication, but the formatting was weird so I didn’t read it and didn’t plan to until I read Millie’s review and changed my mind because of the weird trees in it she mentioned. So yea, I want to read it for the trees.

Audio & E-books

The Strain by Guillermo del Toro and Chuck Hogan, narr. by Ron Perlman

I was in the mood for more zombie stories while reading Justina Ireland’s Dread Nation, so I borrowed The Strain audio book. I read the physical copy last year and loved it, and the audio book is just as good. Perlman did a great job. Now I can’t wait to continue with the other books. The Strain is the first in a trilogy.

Holidays on Ice by David Sedaris, narr. by the David Sedaris, Amy Sedaris, and Ann Magnuson

I hauled the physical book in a previous book haul this year ,but I borrowed the audio book from the library because I wanted to listen to David Sedaris narrate it. It’s really good so if audio books are your thing, then I highly recommend it. But audio books don’t work for me if I didn’t previously read the physical book, so I didn’t retain much from listening to this.

The Fires of Heaven by Robert Jordan, narr. by Michael Kramer and Kate Reading

I’d given up on this series because Jordan’s writing, dialogue, and characters all began to annoy me. But reading about Sarah’s, the Critiquing Chemist, experience reading this series made me miss it, so I borrowed this audio book to catch up. I plan to continue with the sixth book, Lord of Chaos.

Geekerella by Ashley Poston

The reviews I’ve read of this made me curious, so I borrowed the e-book and quite enjoyed it.

ARC

E-book

Sky in the Deep by Adrienne Young

A YA fantasy novel inspired by the Vikings. I recently read this and will post a review soon. The book was published in April.

Free Comic Book Day

Yep! I made it to Free Comic Book Day this year 😀 and I was so proud of myself. I was mad prepared too ’cause I made a list of all the stuff I wanted to get based on this handy guide NPR posted(Gotta love NPR!) I didn’t get everything, but I got a decent selection.

Batch #1

At the first store, I got these samples for free:

Street Angel’s Dog

Shadowman

A Brief History of Tank Girl

Relay

Barrier

I read 2 of them that day and really liked them. I’ll mention the ones I read in another post at some point.

At the same store, I bought:

Kabuki, Vol. 2: Dreams by David Mack (illus.)

I’ve yet to get or own volume 1, but I couldn’t pass up on volume 2 when I saw it, so I got it. I learned about this comic book series from this recommendation booktuber video. The artwork caught my attention and I’ve wanted a copy ever since.

Batch #2

Picked up these samples for free from the second store:

Shadow Roads

The Metabaron

The Wormworld Saga

I read part of one of these and was enjoying it until I had to get off the train. I’ll return to it soon.

At the same store, I bought:

A Funko Pop of Lying Cat from the Saga comic book series written by Brian K. Vaughan and illustrated by Fiona Staples. Lying Cat looks so gruesome there with the blood on his mouth.

The Tea Dragon Society by Kate O’Neill (illus.)

I FINALLY got myself a copy!!! 😀 😀 😀 I was so excited when I saw it. I love the illustrations so I hope I’ll like the story as well.

Samples I wanted but missed out on:

Malika: Creed and Fury

Strangers in Paradise

I plan to try/find these when next I visit a comic book shop.

All done.
Let me know if you’ve read any of these.

        1. Oh that’s the one I should have gotten. My family already thinks I read too many weird, grim things. This will only encourage them to think so.

        2. Hahaha. I want to get the will to go with him. Funkos are tough cuz I think they’re stupid but so cute haha. And they make me want to get complete sets, which I was trying to work on one at a time but now I have too many started and it bothers me that they’re incomplete (lol I’m nuts, Idk why I think this way). But for saga I really just want the will and prince robot

        3. Same here! I was gonna say that too in my previous comment: wanna get the Will and Prince Robot because I like the look of their Funkos.
Lol! Yea, I agree with you. They are silly, but I can’t help getting a few.

  1. Woohooo! Just look at all those wonderful new books! I’m excited for you. 🙂

I picked up one new book this past week, and it just makes me so happy when I have a new addition to my shelves, you know?

So I don’t know if you happen to be a fan of Louisa May Alcott (author of Little Women)… but I’m hosting a reading challenge + giveaway in her honor on my blog this month. Do stop by if you’re interested!
