I Heart Characters! is a weekly meme hosted by Dani at Perspective of a Writer to share our love of great characters. Each week, Dani will assign a topic/type of character that we must find examples of in the various media we consume (books, TV shows, movies, comics, podcasts, etc.).
August 23rd topic:
Character Who’d Run into a Fire to _____
(Fill in the blank! The sky is the limit… If they’d run into a fire for any reason, then they’re who you want to showcase!)

Percy Jackson
A character who’d run into fire to…save his friends — definitely Percy Jackson.
Percy is the protagonist from Rick Riordan’s YA fantasy series Percy Jackson & the Olympians. He’s a demigod, a son of the sea god Poseidon, and his major flaw (if it can be a flaw) is that he’d do anything to save his friends.
I’m reading The Battle of the Labyrinth right now and am actually in the middle of a chapter titled “I Set Myself on Fire,” which I think matches this topic perfectly. I was a fan of Riordan’s YA fantasy novels and since rereading these books, I’m glad to find that I’m still a fan and still enjoy them.
August 30th topic:
High School First Love
(Pick a character you’d want for your first love! Would it last forever or be a passing relationship?!)
Tyler Hughes
I just read this book and loved it so much! 🙂 It strikes me as magical realism and romance and is about sisters connecting after living apart for several years. The Waverley sisters maintain a garden that blooms plants with special powers as well as an eccentric apple tree that bears prophetic apples (well, so everyone believes).
Tyler is the love interest of one of the sisters and I believe he is that sister’s first love. He is an artist and a teacher and is kind and attentive, so I think he wouldn’t be too bad as a first love.
Leo is such a smart character to run into a fire with (tbh same 😂)

Leo is a good pick too since he’s impervious to fire.

Hey Zezee! My writing partner read Garden Spells and quite loved it! It really was a fun and sweet book (according to her too). I love that you choose your characters a lot of times from recent reads I feel like that too, that the last character you read is many times a REALLY great one.
So many people RAVE about Percy Jackson! I feel like I really need to give them a go again. I read the first one around when it first came out and just wasn’t impressed but characters from his series have already been showcased 3 or 4 times and everyone seems to adore them… even upon re-reads! ❤️ Thanks for sharing!!

Yea, also the recent reads characters are often fresher in my mind. Easier to remember.
The Percy Jackson books are fun. I don’t think they are for everyone though. Some readers don’t like it because they find the jokes too immature, but I love them because they’re so corny. 🙂
