I Heart Characters! #10: A Crazy Stephen King Character

I Heart Characters! is a weekly meme hosted by Dani at Perspective of a Writer to share our love of great characters. Each week, Dani will assign a topic/type of character that we must find examples of in the various media we consume (books, TV shows, movies, comics, podcasts, etc.).

September 21 topic:

A Mental Case

A totally crazy character

Davos from Iron Fist

I recently binged on the two seasons of Netflix’s Iron Fist — a TV show about a White dude who disappears for a couple years following a fateful plane crash and returns looking like a sexy hobo but with badass Kung Fu fighting skills AND a hand that lights up when he makes a fist — so the story and characters are still fresh in my mind.

When I saw this category, I immediately thought of Davos, the villain in season 2 of the show. When he appeared in season 1, he gave off a mysterious vibe. Then he started to seem kinda sexy in season 2 while we learn his backstory, and then his obsession with the Iron Fist made him devolve and totally lose it until he’s unable to tell right from wrong. Poor Davos. I’m sure he’ll pop up again in the show. I like his fights with Danny (who annoys the shit outta me).

September 26 topic:

Favorite Stephen King Character

A character from Stephen King’s creative mind that you love!

It can be based on ANY of his adaptions… Let’s prepare for the Halloween season!

I do not have an answer for this one, but since I felt the need to choose, I went with Carrie because she has powers. I’ve seen a handful of film adaptations of King’s books and I usually enjoy the Carrie adaptations. However, I did not like the book. It bored me. I am reading King’s novels in publication order and have liked every novel I’ve read after Carrie — so ‘Salem’s Lot and The Shining. I will read The Stand soon.

Carrie — supernatural horror book/TV show about a teenage girl whose telekinetic powers manifest when she gets her period for the first time. Everyone bullies her, but at prom the kids push her too far so she kicks the town’s ass…kinda.

Since I keep doubling up my I Heart Characters posts and mashing the topics together for the post title, I’ve decided to do a bonus section where I try to think of a character who fits the title of my post. So for this week, that’s —

A Crazy Stephen King Character

Jack Torrance

I gotta go with Jack from The Shining — a horror novel about a family that decides to spend the holidays secluded in a supposedly haunted hotel. It’s debatable what exactly happened at the hotel because one can argue that the hotel is haunted and Jack was driven to madness by the hotel’s ghosts, or that Jack breaks under the stress of his financial constraints and responsibilities in addition to possibly battling a mental illness.

So…yeah…that’s what I got.

Let me know which characters you would choose for these topics.

    1. Lol! Yea man!. I can’t wait for the next season. Do you know if there’s another show we should watch before Iron Fist season 2? When I saw season 2, I felt like I missed something between seasons 1 & 2. The Black cop lady seemed to pop up out of nowhere and the characters were familiar with her though I didn’t know who she is.

      1. I believe the missing piece here is Luke Cage season 1 & 2, as well as the Defenders season 1. Her story evolves throughout those 3 seasons. As for what comes next, after Iron Fist season 2, it’s Daredevil season 3! And that’s just around the corner! 😁

        1. Lashaan man! Thanks so much for that!! Now I know what to catch up on. I still need to catch up on Daredevil. I loved season 1, but didn’t watch season 2.
And by the way, that drunken master fight in Iron Fist was my absolute favorite part of it all. I think it’s in season 2. Reminded me of old Asian kung fu movies I watched back in the ’90s (they were probably made in the ’80s).

        2. No problem hahah To watch Defenders, you’d also.. sort of.. “have to” see Jessica Jones Season 1 just to know who she is and all. If you haven’t already of course 😀 And yes, I know what you speak of! I believe it was in season 1 though. It’s that fight with the guy guarding the door, right? 😛 I’m a huge fan of those martial arts Asian movies myself. Jackie Chan was sort of the dude known for being the “Drunken Master” too with his 1978 movie of the same name. Of course it was a blend of skill with humour, but no one did it better than him hahah 😀

        3. YESS!!! That’s the scene!! 😀 😀 It’s been such a long time since I’ve seen it in a movie. It made me like the show even more. 😀 I’m so glad I could geek out about this with you, lol!
Oh, I’ve seen Jessica Jones and really liked it too. But thanks for telling me that tho. I’m slowly working my way through the TV shows. So far, I’ve seen season 1 of Daredevil and Jessica Jones and the 2 seasons of Iron Fist — btw, Madame Gao is my favorite and Colleen Wing.

        4. You’ve got plenty of shows to explore in that case, whenever you feel like it too. I also personally adored The Punisher Season 1 (which should be seen after season 2 of Daredevil). And hell yes for Colleen. ❤ ❤ ❤ She's probably the main reason why I'm still able to survive throughout Iron Fist with goddamn Danny Rand…. LOL

        5. Lol I need a timeline or something for the shows. I think I’ll rewatch Daredevil 1 and work my way back up. I don’t mind doing so because there’s this one fight scene I want to see again. It’s when he was fighting in a hallway and was drugged or tired, can’t remember which. I love that fight! 😀
Lol lol IKR!! Danny annoys the shit outta me. He never thinks things through. The other characters even point out how stupid his plans are and still he ignores them and makes things worse.

        6. Ahh yes, Daredevil is by far my favourite of all the Netflix Marvel TV series. The fight scenes, the script, the acting, everything about it is just brilliant! The hallway fights in the show are sooo iconic now. The Punisher would come second for me, and then Jessica Jones. 😛

  1. Great post, Zezee! I love how you connected the theme all the way through. I just picked up The Shining from the library. I’m about to read my second Stephen King novel!! So exciting. 🙂

Hm. Who would I pick? I’d pick Don Quixote. Why? He’s a lovable loon! He is off his rocker, but in the best way possible. 🙂

    1. Ohh!! I’d be interested in seeing what you think of it. I really liked the Shining, probably marked it as a fav too.

Oh Don Quixote is a good pick. I’ve only read a few pages of the book, but what I read was very entertaining.

  2. ooooh I love the idea of the new bonus character based on your post title Zezee! That is so neat and I love that you chose Jack! I always see gifs about him (I think they are anyway…?!) Carrie is a fascinating choice too… since you’re by far the most well read in regards to Stephen King (very few of the others are even aware of what adaptions are his) I thought Carrie was a thoughtful choice. She does seem to be one of the most popular to remake, and there is something so relatable about her character. And I’ve see that Iron Fist floating around Netflix and wondered if I should suggest it to my roommates as that sounds like something they would enjoy… glad to hear you enjoyed it! ❤️ Thanks for sharing these!! 😀

    1. Lol that’s interesting. I’ve only read 4 of King’s books so far and only 3 are novels.
Yeah, totally check out Iron Fist. It’s better than I thought it would be. I love the martial arts in it.
