I Heart Characters! #16: A Minor Character OTP Hook Up

I Heart Characters! is a weekly meme hosted by Dani at Perspective of a Writer to share our love of great characters. Each week, Dani assigns a topic/type of character that we must find examples of in the various media we consume (books, TV shows, movies, comics, podcasts, etc.).

Since I often skip a week (or two), I mash the character types Dani assigns into one to create a bonus character type that I include at the end of the post. The title of my post indicates the bonus character type I’ll feature at the end. But for now, here are the topics Dani assigned.

Book Haul #50: Wow!

Wow! It’s my 50th book haul post! 😀 I think I should celebrate this. Maybe buy myself another book or something.

Marlon James is one of my favorite authors, though I’ve only read one of his now four books. But the one I read — The Book of Night Women, a historical fiction novel set on a plantation in Jamaica, — is one of my favorite books; so I was beyond excited when it was announced couple years back that he would write a fantasy novel.

Celaena Sardothien sucks. She’s not a great assassin at all! I’ve only read the first 2 books of this series and they were both average. Because of what the story promised – the protagonist being a badass assassin, – I was disappointed by it. The protagonist doesn’t reach that level.

Delicious! by Ruth Reichl

A contemporary novel about a young woman who moves to New York City to work at a food magazine. I read this one last year and though I liked it at first, I was annoyed by the time it ended. The only thing I consistently loved was the food mentioned. I still would like to try making the cake the protagonist is great at baking. A recipe for it is included in the book.

I often do book tags on here but sometimes, when I’m stressed or out of ideas or out of book reviews or in a blogging slump or just feel like posting a bunch of book tags, I declare a Book Tag Week. I’m starting to think of it as a fun blogging holiday. Hmm… 🙂

The first two nonfiction books I read this year are astounding. The first — Dopesick by Beth Macy, which I recently reviewed, — is about America’s opioid crisis and how the pharmaceutical company Purdue Pharma helped start it with its aggressive marketing of the opioid drug Oxycontin that many doctors overprescribed. The second I will discuss in this post. It was a shocking read and I’m sure my face was an expression of astonishment the entire time I read it because “How the hell was she able to get away with this for so long??”
