I actually made it to the beach this summer. 😀
Although I make plans to go every summer, I never make it due to being too busy; but this summer I went on a reading retreat at the beach with a friend and had a great time. We only read a page each and instead spent our time people watching and talking. It was loads of fun.

BOOK TAG WEEK!! continues with the Summer Sweatalong Book Tag, which is perfect for this time of year and, more specifically, Tuesday, August 12, 2019 because it’s supposed to be hot as shit on that day in my part of the world. Jeez!
Apparently it’s gonna go up to the 90s, at which point the humidity will peak and stuff will happen to cause really bad thunderstorms. So in addition to sweating my ass off, I’ll be treated to lots of clashing and banging in the heavens as the weather sorts its self out.

It’s Book Tag Week!!! 😀 😀 😀
I haven’t done one of these in ages, and it’s been a while since I’ve done a book tag. (Well, only two weeks but it had been a long time before that one since I’d done one, so BOOK TAG WEEK!!)
Book Tag Week is exactly as it sounds. It’s a week dedicated to nothing but book tags. That’s all I’ll post on here. I see it as a fun blogging holiday that’s perfect for summer. I often do book tags because I like reading such posts. I get book recommendations from them sometimes or learn something new about a particular book depending on the prompt in the tag. I hope you’ll get a book recommendation or two from my book tags too (although I tend to repeat books. Haaa…).

Weekend Reads is a weekly post in which I discuss a variety of topics and mention the books I plan to read on the weekend. However instead of a topic, I’ll instead share my progress on my N.E.W.T.s (Nastily Exhausting Wizarding Tests).
The N.E.W.T. Magical Readathon is inspired by the Harry Potter books. As in the books, participants first sit for their O.W.L. exams (which took place in April) to past subjects that will determine what N.E.W.T. exams they can take and, ultimately, what wizarding career they can choose.
I’ve chosen to become an Aurologist — someone who reads and studies auras — and although the requirements for this career aren’t extensive, I’ve added a few more subjects I’d also like to pass to be considered an Aurologist who’s well versed in other fields. Well, then. Here’s my progress so far:

Every time I saw this book on the shelf at the bookstore, I felt compelled to pick it up and read. The title made me curious. It made me wonder “Oh my god! A kid grew up on meth? WTF!” The title worked for getting people to pick up the book, but once I started reading, Sheff pulled me in. I was just amazed and sometimes shocked at all he had been through due to his drug addiction. I felt sorry for him when he spoke about his struggle with addiction and to get enough money to feed it, and his struggle to get clean and heal his relationship with his family.
RIP. Toni Morrison.
When I first read this message in a friend’s Facebook post, I wondered who he was talking about. Surely not my Toni Morrison. I was in disbelief and even when another friend confirmed the news and I finally saw the articles pouring in on the web, I still didn’t want to believe it. Toni Morrison had passed.
Toni Morrison died on Monday, August 5, in Bronx, NY, from complications of pneumonia. She was 88. As the news of her passing settles around me and into me, as I begin to accept it, I feel a loss and am moved by her passing. No, I did not personally know Morrison, nor have I read all her books or have met her, but I felt her presence in my life. She (her books) were a presence in the households I lived in, especially when I moved to the U.S.

These aren’t exactly my top books. I chose books I really enjoyed reading/learning from that aren’t comics/graphic novels but are under 300 pages.

Madness is Hornbacher’s autobiography about her struggle with bipolar disorder, ultra-rapid-cycle type 1, which is hard to treat. It’s a great read and a very informative one, but it was a difficult read too. I was hooked the entire time I read, but Hornbacher is very descriptive in her writing, so I often felt uncomfortable and had to take breaks from the book. This one could potentially be triggering for some, so be mindful that it discusses substance abuse, eating disorder, and self-harm as well as other topics.
July was a great beginning for the summer season. It was a busy time for me, but I had so much fun. 🙂
Let’s Rewind is my version of a monthly wrap up but instead of talking about only books, I include all types of other stuff, like articles… bookish news… commercials… random-ass links… movies… art… podcasts… cartoons… and whatever the hell happened to me in the month. You know, the usual stuff that people talk about in monthly wrap ups. So read on to see what I did and read this month. You might stumble upon something that interests you.
Despite the blistering heat wave that hung around the northeast for much of July, I managed to stay cool and enjoy the month. 😛 I had family over to visit for the U.S. Independence Day weekend, which made that holiday loads of fun. I just love it when my family gets together. We talk, we laugh, we cuss, we shout, we love each other. And no matter what happens, eventually we get along. Lol!
It was a great weekend spent shopping and just hanging out. We even had a barbecue; well, my mom did and I laughed at her because there were no hotdogs or burgers at the barbecue although there were buns for them. Apparently, she doesn’t like those things, but she likes the bread. So we had those buns, baked mac & cheese, barbecue chicken, corn on the cob, mixed vegetables, and plantains as well as watermelon. My aunt mixed us up some tasty mojito (very strong mojito) that succeeded in getting everyone tipsey. I placed what was left in the fridge but forgot about it, so it was in there for about a week after the barbecue before I drank it thinking it’s juice and got a little drunk. Lol! It was very strong by then.
The end of July was Harry Potter’s birthday. Since I haven’t done a book tag in a long time (quite unusual for me), I decided to do a Harry Potter-themed one (although I’m a few days late for his birthday…happy belated?).

I’m still a little upset that I missed out on getting a copy of this AND meeting Erin Morgenstern at the ALA Conference in June. I love her Night Circus novel, which is about a magical circus that’s open only at night where two magicians compete to see who’s best. It’s beautifully written and easily sweeps up the reader in the story. I’m hoping The Starless Sea will be the same.
