Here are some small books I own. And I mean small in size, not necessarily the number of pages. For most of them, the size is why I made the purchase because some of these books almost fit entirely in the palm of my hand.
I’m so happy I gave this one a chance, since I downloaded it entirely at random from my library. I just liked the cover and the description, believing I’d find it relatable (which I did), and decided to give it a go.

This was a good read. I have a soft spot for wordless picture books and comics because readers have to rely on the art to understand the story, as well as the nonverbal ways in which we communicate and express ourselves. There are some words in Isla to Island, seen in written materials such as letters, but we do not get any verbal dialogue in the story.

Certainly this Victorian erotica novella about a virginal 18-year-old orphaned girl sent to live with her stern aunt and uncle who introduce her to BDSM by force. There’s lots of spanking.

Here’s a book I chose at random to read. I forgot how I went about doing so, maybe I used a random number generator, or closed my eyes and pointed. Either way, it’s not a book I planned on reading anytime soon or was in the mood for or was told to read.
It was recommended to me through Rachel at Kalanadi’s review of it years ago. She’s a booktuber. I forgot what she said to entice me to read the story — maybe it was a simple mention of witches — but it got me curious enough to add it to my collection.

The people of Lychford, a sleepy small town in the U.K. somewhere, are divided. A major supermarket chain would like to build a branch there, but some folks welcome the change and the employment opportunities it would bring, while others would rather things remain the same, authentic. Still there are others who see that the supermarket’s construction would destroy the supernatural boundaries in their town, opening up portals to others worlds — and the malevolent beings there.
Not that I like time travel (I hate it actually), but this has been sitting in my list of book tags to do for a while (since I found it over on Brainfluff back in 2017) and I like the questions, so I thought, why not finally give it a go?

Umm… I do enjoy reading romances set in England during the Regency and Victorian periods. I guess that’s because there is an abundance of such books, so I’ve grown used to seeing them and reading them. And I guess another favorite is fantasy books inspired by the medieval period, which I assume is the majority of high-fantasy books.
This was a delightful read. The Golden Compass is a book I’ve wanted to read for over 10 years now, but I kept putting it off. I’d attempted it shortly after graduating college, but didn’t feel drawn to the story and had difficulty with the concept of daemons, so I gave up on the book but vowed to return to it when I felt more receptive to the story. I’m glad I did that. Reading it in 2023 was the best time to pick it up.

The Golden Compass is the first novel in a young-adult fantasy series. In this book, the story is set in a world that mirrors our own and is centered on Lyra Belacqua, a brave golden-haired girl who’s supposedly an orphan, which is why she’s raised among the Scholars of Jordan College (which I thought of as the equivalent of Oxford) — the only girl there as women are not often Scholars.
It’s been such a long time since I’ve done one of these posts (not since mid 2021, I think) that I feel much out of practice. But I’d like to bring it back this year. These posts then to be long (heh, heh), but they let me chat about books I wouldn’t otherwise review (those I reread) and share thoughts on things I wouldn’t do a separate post for.
Let’s Rewind is my version of a monthly wrap up but instead of talking about only books, I include all types of other stuff, like articles… bookish news… commercials… random-ass links… movies… art… podcasts… cartoons… and whatever else happened to me in the month. You know, the usual stuff that people talk about in monthly wrap ups. So read on to see what I did and read this month. You might stumble upon something that interests you.
2021 and 2022 were such stressful, busy, trying years for me that I was surprised when I felt light and unburdened when January 2023 rolled around. I hope it’s a sign for how the rest of the year will be.

I’m gonna confess now that I won’t read any of these within the next seven weeks, but I certainly can try to read them within the next two years, lol! (Master procrastinator here! I have to work in time to procrastinate on reading them, lol!)
I used the random number generator on Google and plugged in the total number of books, e-books, comics, and audio books I own — 1,369. Below are the numbers that correspond with an unread book (and about half of that 1,369 books are unread).
I bought this from a Kinokuniya location in Manhattan a couple years ago. I really like that bookstore. And I’ll hold on to my copy of Ico a while longer, and hopefully read it soonish.
