Best book I read in 2022

Elder Race by Adrian Tchaikovsky

Elder Race is easily the best thing I read last year. It’s a sci-fi novella about a lonely scientist at a secluded outpost on a planet, where he’s supposed to only study the inhabitants and not interact much with them. And it’s also about a princess seeking help from a sorcerer to defeat a demon terrorizing her people. We read from both characters’ perspectives, one which seems to be telling a sci-fi story and another which seems firmly set in fantasy. I loved the structure of this story and the emotional depths it explores.

2021 End of Year Book Survey

I always enjoy doing this year-end survey that Jamie, the Perpetual Page-Turner, created. It’s a fun way to reflect on things I read in the past year. It’s also very long, so this time I’ll only do the first part, which focuses on books read.

BEST BOOK I READ IN 2021

In the Garden of Spite by Camilla Bruce

It’s probably my favorite book of the year. And it’s one I couldn’t stop talking about. I recommended it to everybody, although it’s not one that will appeal to everyone. It’s a historical thriller about a female serial killer and is based on a real person. I think Bruce did a fantastic job with it. It’s my first time trying one of her books and I look forward to reading more.

2020 End of Year Book Survey

It’s that time again for the very long, very detailed book survey created by Jamie, the Perpetual Page-Turner. I enjoy doing this each year. It’s just a fun way to reflect on one’s reading. There are a lot of questions, so I’ll most likely skip some of them (and you’ll most likely not read all of them, lol).

The Book With No Pictures by B.J. Novak

It’s a children’s picture book that has no pictures in it, and it’s the best book I read in 2020 because it was light and simple and the best companion to have during such a tumultuous year.

The Secret Lives of Color by Kassia St. Clair

Unlike the past two years, it was pretty easy to choose a favorite for 2019. The books I read didn’t appeal so strongly that the decision would be hard, so The Secret Lives of Color was an easy selection. It’s probably the first that I’ve chosen a nonfiction book as my ultimate favorite read for a year.

Reflecting on 2017: Blogging

It’s been a great blogging year, though I’ve been so busy that finding time to write and format blog posts and to read the posts of other bloggers became tricky. I applaud all bloggers who are able to post regularly AND find time to keep up with the posts of other bloggers. If you work full time while doing this, please give me some tips on how you manage it all without getting burnt out.

I still miss the Year in Review post WordPress usually puts together for us at the end of the year. It did a great job of concisely wrapping up our blogging year for us and presenting such stats in a nice graphic, which we could then post on our blogs. Since that’s no longer available, I have to do this myself, but since I am busy and have limited digital art skills, I’ll just talk about it all in a usual post. I guess it will be boring for some, but it’ll definitely be very useful for me.

I’m glad to see that my blog has grown a lot since the last blogging reflection post I did last January. My site views and visitors have increased from 16,000 and 7,000, respectively, to approximately:

Why did you start a blog in the first place?

Because I wanted to chat about books and reading with people who are as interested as I am in talking about those things, especially about fantasy novels. My family and friends read, though not as avidly as me, but they prefer contemporary, literary, or mystery novels, which I enjoy as well, but they refuse to read fantasy, which I love, so I had no one to talk to about that genre or to even recommend books to me.

Languishing in the Spam Folder of Doom

A Plea for Release From Spam Jail

I’ve been outcasted from your blogs. For some reason, WordPress has seen fit to mark me as spam. I do not know why this is. It’s not as if I’ve peppered people with comments recently. I’ve barely had time to draft posts much less comment on other blogs. But now that I have time to comment, no one sees what I submit. It’s irritating and now my sunny Sunday is overcasted by the pall of the Spam dungeon.

Since I don’t know what caused my imprisonment, I don’t know how to break out or how to fix it. I could send notes to folks asking them to check their Spam folders, but to do so for each blog I visit would be time consuming. So, if you all don’t mind, could you please check your Spam folders and unblock me? Chances are if I liked one of your posts recently, then I probably commented on it too.

Sunshine Blogger Award, Pt. 3

I’m in a happy mood and since it’s April, meaning rain and overcast weather because of Spring and her waters, I’ve decided to do this award post to brighten my blog. I was nominated for the Sunshine Blogger Award by Green Onion, whose blog I love. Take a look at his crazy tea party post, which I’m sure got way outta hand very quickly.

Can you describe your ideal man-cave/woman-cave/library, and what kind of things we would find in there?

Hmm… let’s go with my ideal apartment, which I do not have. It would be situated in a city that’s easy to traverse on foot and by public transport (though public transport will sometimes be very crappy because of numerous delayed trains and other BS) and that has lots of museums that I can visit for free. My apartment will be a cozy place swathed in the colors of the sea. It will have books and art everywhere and will have a subtle scent of jasmine in the air. I doubt there will be a TV or many chairs, but there will be a laptop and cushions galore. And no matter the time of day, my apartment will be the best spot to watch the sun set or rise.
