Best Books So Far in 2020

It’s past due that I discuss the best books I’ve read so far this year.

Below are 11 of the best books I read. They are mostly listed in the order I read them. Not all of them are favorites, but I’ll certainly point out which books are as I go along.

For the most part, rereads aren’t considered, but I reread one of my favorite series in a different format and loved it so much that I had to include it on this list.

Farseer trilogy audiobooks by Robin Hobb, narr. by Paul Boehmer

★★★★★
(Favorite)

Summary: This is a fantasy trilogy about the bastard son of a prince who becomes an assassin’s apprentice. The books closely follow Fitz growing up at Buckkeep court and becoming entangled in political intrigues and taboo magic.

Top 5 Tuesday #37: Series I Want to Start

Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by Shanah, the Bionic Book Worm.

This week’s topic:

Top 5 series I want to start

Well, this is more the top 5 series to pop in my head when I thought of this topic.

Inheritance trilogy

I’ve yet to read anything by N.K. Jemisin but when I do, I’d like to start with The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms, the first novel in her Inheritance trilogy, which seems to be of the fantasy genre. I want to start with her fantasy stuff before going sci-fi.

Top 5 Tuesday #36: Popular Books on My TBR

Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by Shanah, the Bionic Book Worm.

This week’s topic:

Top 5 popular books I haven’t yet read

I organized my Goodreads TBR by number of ratings to determine which are the most popular. Of those with the highest number of ratings, I haven’t yet read these:

The Girl on the Train by Paula Hawkins

I doubt I’ll ever read it, now that I think about it. I should remove it from my TBR, which reminds me that I should do a Down the TBR Hole post soon.

Top Ten Tuesday #45: Some Good Reads I Hardly Mention

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme that was created and hosted by The Broke and the Bookish but is now managed by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s topic:

Books I enjoyed but rarely talk about

I enjoyed these 10 books and comics but hardly talk about them lately. I’ll link to my reviews of them (some of which were published in my early blogging days when I didn’t think much about including spoiler warnings).

The Hero’s Guide to Saving Your Kingdom by Christopher Healy

A fun middle-grade fantasy novel about the princes charming from fairytales. I really enjoyed reading it and loved that the story is accompanied by Todd Harris’s illustrations of the characters. I still hope that this will become an animated movie. I’d like to reread it as well.

Top 5 Tuesday #35: These Made Me Laugh

Top 5 Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by Shanah, the Bionic Book Worm.

This week’s topic:

Top 5 books that made me laugh

Whenever I come across topics like this one, I realize that I don’t read many books that are humorous. I was surprised to be able to list 5 of them for this post.

Wyrd Sisters by Terry Pratchett

I read this just a few days ago. It’s the second novel in the Witches subseries of the Discworld fantasy series. It’s about three witches who plot to overthrow a tyrant, and it was loads of fun to read. Pratchett’s novel are humorous fantasy, so there’s often something to chuckle at.

Top Ten Tuesday #44: Books I Bought Because of Booktube & Bloggers

Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme that was created and hosted by The Broke and the Bookish but is now managed by That Artsy Reader Girl. This week’s topic:

Books I Bought/Borrowed Because…

I’ve decided to focus on books I bought because booktubers and bloggers often mention them.

Mistborn trilogy by Brandon Sanderson

It’s on my bookshelves still waiting to be read. I bought the U.K. editions because these white covers are just gorgeous. That’s part of the reason why I bought the boxed set.

Top 5 Tuesday #33: U – V – W – X – Y – Z

This week’s topic:

U – V – W – X – Y – Z

U is for…

Myron Uhlberg

Uhlberg wrote the children’s picture book The Sound of All Things, which is illustrated by Ted Papoulas. It’s set in New York City in the 1930s and is about a hearing boy visiting Coney Island with his deaf parents and describing the sound of things he hears to his father. It’s a wonderful read, and the illustrations are very realistic and beautiful.
