Let’s Rewind: July 2021

2021 is just chugging along. I see that it’s trying to be a better year than 2020 was, but the hiccups along the way are unavoidable since people are VERY intent on being asses. Anyway, let’s talk about July.

July was a fun month for me, although that wasn’t reflected on my blog. I got into a blogging slump in July and was not motivated to post much (which is why I’m VERY behind on review posts) or to even visit other blogs. I was just tired of it all, so I took a break from blogging toward the end of the month and now feel refreshed, thankfully. Expect several posts in the upcoming weeks and for me to catch up on other blogs as well.

Let’s Rewind: June 2021

We’re already halfway through the year. I won’t express surprise at how quickly time is passing since it insists on maintaining a galloping pace when I’m not paying attention. It’s a tricksy thing, time. It loves to sneak past us, faster than light, and leave us bewildered about where it’s going and what we’ll be doing when we get there.

June. It was fun. I did things, saw people, and felt exhausted by the end of it. There was lots to celebrate since it was Pride month and Juneteenth became a federal holiday, but… I don’t know. I guess I was exhausted or something because I only celebrated these things in very minor ways.

A break was needed, so I was happy for the few outings I went on — visiting a different town with friends to hang out and shop books and visiting Las Vegas with family to… basically look around, walk until tired, and then give in to the time difference and sleep.

Things ramped up in June. The movements and protests increased. Corona infections continued to rise (in the U.S.) despite earlier claims that things might get better by now. The wind brought the U.S. a sand cloud from the Sahara, and there was news that there’s a swine flu that could reach pandemic levels (sigh).

Is it just me or are the months starting to run into each other? In my personal life, not much happened in June. I worked. I slept. I ate. I talked to folks. I stayed inside, tried to stay 6 feet away from others when outside, and reminded myself not to touch my face when out and about, which is becoming increasingly difficult. Has that been happening to you?

June was great and filled with fun times with friends. 🙂 It was a great start for summer.

June was wonderful! I had fun and even managed to relax a bit despite my jobs. In my personal life, I attended a Caribbean music festival, which was loads of fun and got a little crazy toward its end, but I enjoyed it all. 😛

I traveled to Denver for work and was surprised how much I loved it there. It was my first time visiting the city and I was beyond excited. I was excited to get a window seat on the plane so I can observe how the American land changes as I fly west. I was excited when I touched down in Denver and felt the dry heat. It was my first time experiencing that. Being from Jamaica and living technically in U.S. south (the DMV is basically the border between northern and southern U.S.), I’ve only ever experienced tropical climate or whatever it is Washington, D.C., has. The dry heat was a nice change. If Denver didn’t get so cold in the winter and receive so much snowfall, I would seriously consider moving there. The air was also lighter and easier to breathe, and it was easy to navigate the city as well. I didn’t expect it to be so flat, though, and the mountains were a breathtaking view. I just kept staring at them.

For my posts, I also include articles, music, art, TV shows, and whatever else I did in the month.

June. It had its ups and downs, but it wasn’t too bad overall. I was busy for a good bit of it and did some travelling for work, but I was also able to read a bunch of books (though not as many articles, unfortunately) and see a couple movies/TV shows. So far, summer seems to be hectic for me and I guess that will be my summer schedule for a while. But I’m hoping a week will come along that’ll be unhurried. Just a laid-back, totally chill week where I can take my time relishing the delights of all the things I love. That’s what I look forward to every summer and I need something like that before my favorite season ends.

Books read:

The beginning of June marked my completion of Robin Hobb’s Tawney Man trilogy with Fool’s Fate. Emily of Embuhlee liest and I blazed through this book. We were eager to see how the story would end and what would become of our beloved characters. I enjoyed the story and can’t wait to jump into the next series of this story. I just hope that I’ll be able to read from my favorite character’s perspective again because the end of this book made me think that probably won’t happen.

For my posts, I also include articles, music, art, TV shows, and whatever else I did in the month.

It’s weird, but I feel as if I’ve forgotten everything that happened in June. It went by so fast! And I did so much but sometimes when I look back on the month, it seems that I didn’t do much at all. Major life highlights for this month include changing jobs, making new friends, planning an adventure with my family for later this year, finally seeing a play, and realizing that maybe I should get serious about keeping a journal because it’s too hard to remember everything. But overall, June was a great month for my personal life.

Unfortunately, my reading kind of suffered along the way. This month was spent making progress in books I’m in the middle of rather than completing books. As such, June has less completed books than last month. I also didn’t blog as much and many posts I planned to get out weren’t completed or published. I guess I’ll spend July making up for what was missed in June.

2016 Reading Wrap-Up: Second Quarter

It’s the end of the second quarter of the year and my reading is way better than I expected. I even bumped my Goodreads reading goal back up to 60. That is, I must read 60 things this year (books, magazines, comics, etc.). This quarter was even better than the first. I didn’t realize I read this much until I did this wrapup.

What’s On Your Nightstand: June 2016

What’s on Your Nightstand is a monthly meme hosted by 5 Minutes for Books that summarizes what you’ve read for the month, what you’re currently reading, and what you plan to read next. It’s basically a wrap-up, though not as detailed depending on how you structure your reading wrap-ups. The meme is held the fourth Tuesday of every month. (I assume that means the last Tuesday of a month that has 5 Tuesdays.)

I’m still trying to work out how to format this because I don’t want it be too similar to my quarterly wrap-ups. For this post, I’ll do as before and list what I recently read, but I’ll also give a sentence or two on how I reacted to the book.

Books read:

The Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief audio book was the first thing I completed this month. Unfortunately, I didn’t enjoy as much as I did when I first read the physical copy. I didn’t like how it was narrated or the voice used for Annabeth, which sounded kind of whiney to me. If I continue to reread the series, I will return to the physical books instead.
